“Emerald Necklace”, Victor Borisov-Musatov - description of the painting

Emerald necklace - Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. 125 x 214.3 cm

The first years of the twentieth century are filled with dreams of a new Renaissance in Russian art. Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov paints this picture, echoing the "Spring" by Botticelli, and so unlike his previous works. Contemporaries did not immediately appreciate it, but now it is one of the masterpieces of the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery.

A large meadow flooded with sunlight. The fluffy heads of dandelions are seen among the soft thick grass, playing with all shades of green: from light emerald to juicy malachite and calm turquoise. From above, the image space is framed by dense foliage of oak branches with carved blue-green leaves on thin brown branches.

Young, smartly dressed girls stroll in the shade of oaks. To the left, apart from the others, are two friends. We see an elegant profile of a sad young lady in a dark outfit and a yellow-gold cloak. Another, in a delicate lilac dress and a translucent shawl with golden patterns, dreams of something of her own. A slight smile plays on her lips.

And on the right is the impetuous movement of a pretty woman. She was about to pick up the heavy skirts of a purple dress decorated with the finest lace collar and cuffs, and rush to someone behind the painting. Sun glare lies on copper-red curls, on delicate porcelain shoulders. Behind her, two friends with understanding and affectionate smiles are looking in the same direction.

These two groups are united in a single young lady in an olive-colored outfit, standing in the center. A bright sparkling brooch in the sun casts gold sparks on satin fabric. Turning to the stragglers, she calls them with a soft smile to join the others. Beautiful hands are folded in an inviting gesture.

The picture is very melodic - the smooth waves of fluffy dandelions repeat the bends of the lower edge of oak foliage, they are echoed by the movements of girlish hands. The alternation of light and dark spots emphasizes the rhythm of movement, gradually increasing from unhurried and calm to fast and swift. The melody continues to sound further, not limited to image frames.

Juicy bright palette of cold deep blue, green shades, reminiscent of overflows of precious stones, diluted with spots of cream, pale purple and yellow, gives a feeling of cool shade on a hot summer day.

A round dance of beautiful girls floats to soft, bewitching music, folding in a necklace of precious stones on the green of the meadow - a symbol of blossoming youth and eternal spring.
