Likely view of the White Stone Kremlin by Dmitry Donskoy. 51 x 80 cm

Thanks to the historical drawings of Apollinaris Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, we can see the ancient Moscow, its streets and temples, trace how it changed from century to century, turning into a beautiful city, in which many ancient monuments have been preserved.

Despite the great preparatory work, the artist was not always able to restore the completely real image of the capital, but his excellent knowledge of history and architecture helped him to write works saturated with the living spirit of the past, although the word “probable” was added to their name.

The second half of the XIV century. The wooden fortress was destroyed several times by fire, so a new one is built of white stone, and Moscow has since been called white stone.

The construction is almost finished. Strong walls, the thickness of which is visible through small arched windows-loopholes end with rectangular teeth. Long boards lift to the very top of the towers, building the roof. On the left is a powerful quadrangular Borovitsky passage tower. Its gates are wide open, a drawbridge is lowered across a deep moat dug around the Kremlin.

A magnificent panorama of the fortress opens from the bank of the Neglinnaya. Sunlight colors white masonry in warm pinkish-beige shades. The tan roofs of tall wooden houses are pressed on the hill, between which the cathedrals - Arkhangelsk and Uspensky - are clearly visible.

And next to the Kremlin walls, life is seething. Large loaded boats, low in the water, one after the other beach. Some, descending a sail, approach high bridges, where workers are waiting for them, lowering the ropes of hoisting machines, similar to cranes. Other rooks hurry to low plank berths leading to covered shopping arcades, where many merchants await their goods.

The drawing can be examined for a long time, finding new details and the smallest details, which the artist conveys with such skill in clear, precise lines and strokes.

Thanks to the translucent shades of warm pale brown, light yellow, bluish, green and cream colors, the picture is filled with light and spaciousness. The sense of reality does not leave what is happening, the poetic image of Moscow delights in its beauty.
