The vision of the prophet Ezekiel - Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel. 102 x 55 cm
The last years of the life of Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel. A slight improvement came after a serious mental illness, and he again returns to the image of the Prophet, inspired by the poem of A.S. Pushkin. Almost blind, the artist begins to write a sketch for a painting dedicated to one of the visions of the prophet Ezekiel - the phenomenon of a chariot drawn by four winged creatures with four faces: a calf, a lion, an eagle and a human being.
The work was never completed, only the first layer of delicate blue paint was applied to the sketch, and the flames were outlined in orange. Schematic lines outline the figures of angels, wings spread behind their backs. Only the painter managed to write their heads.
Gleams of fire lie on austere ascetic faces. Under the black eyebrows sparkle large attentive eyes, in which lurking compassion. The staring, searching gaze of the messengers of God conveying his will. A raised hand holds a shining sword. An inevitable fate, full of trials and service to the Lord, appears before the prophet.
At the very bottom of the drawing, the painter writes with black strokes Ezekiel's shocked face, turned to the angels, faith is shining in wide-open enlightened eyes. In a person’s profile, the traits of a master are guessed.
The drawing fascinates, looks at us with many eyes, it blows with power, strength of mind, but at the same time we feel an internal confusion and doubt about the right choice.
