Charming, touching painting by A. Savrasov “Spring Day” was written in 1873, at a time when the creative abilities of the author reached their peak of development.
The master’s later compositions were often gloomy both in content and in color. In contrast, the landscapes of the 1870s are filled with cheerfulness, bright hope and a sense of harmony.
Spring, marking a transition between cold and short-lived, but long-awaited warmth, was Alexei Kondratievich’s favorite time of the year, because this is the time of awakening sleeping nature and sleeping hopes.
The clarity of the silhouettes, the yellowish color, reminiscent of an old faded photograph, suggest some similarities with the graphics.
Trees reaching for the heavens stand out among white snows and sky blue. There is a feeling that these trees are the main thing in the picture, and the rest is just an addition to them. However, on the canvas there is everything that the artist loves to depict: water with the skies reflected in it, a fence, a hut, a forest in the distance.
There is nothing ahead but a huge puddle: free space is left so that the viewer can “enter” the picture.
In the middle plan, a group of bare trees is visible, separated by a fence from the water, and a path leading to human habitation. A little further is the forest. On the right side of the picture, several more trees lurked by the coming spring by surprise. Over the beauty of the familiar landscape stretches a soft blue sky. The wide openness, the impressive breadth of the panorama are characteristic of Savrasov’s work.
He also liked to portray spring because at this time of the year the terrain, not cluttered with rugged vegetation, like in summer, but not lifeless, like in winter, was clearly visible. In every detail, the author’s love for his native nature is felt.
