"Clean Monday", Vasily G. Perov - description of the painting

Clean Monday - Vasily Grigorievich Perov. 22.8 x 17.5 cm

Vasily Grigoryevich Perov is often called the founder of the genre of critical realism. It is saturated with kindness, peace and love.

On clean Monday, an elderly couple walks leisurely and gracefully along the street. Bath procedures behind, their faces are rosy, steamed, happy, pleasantly tired.

The clothes on the spouses are worn, worn out. A bundle of groceries and a bunch of bagels, apparently bought along the way, indicate that at home the old people sit down in a pot-bellied samovar and drink fragrant tea.

A couple of generally unremarkable old people wandering slowly along the street, carrying on some ordinary conversations, but why did this work by Perov become so famous all over the world and is stored in the famous Tretyakov Gallery?

Most likely, because the author is brilliantly able to convey human emotions and feelings. And the main sensation of the viewer is how well these people feel good and warm together. Having lived together a whole life that was clearly not easy, this couple captivates with its affection for each other, the spiritual closeness that is felt in their gestures and facial expressions. They are simply pleased that they are close and they are together.
