Maternal duty is Peter de Hoch. 52.5 x 61 cm
One of the most lyrical paintings of Peter de Hoch, written by him during the heyday of his work, and his favorite plot - motherly concerns. The canvas seems to emit golden light.
A cozy room, well lit with light from the top window. In the right corner is a light brown wooden bed. Striped curtains of olive color are spread apart, a bed and two snow-white pillows are neatly made with a checkered bedspread. The freshly washed floors of light terracotta tiles shine moistly. The rooms are decorated with paintings.
Next to the bed on a chair sits a young woman in a red sweater, a dark blue skirt and a strict black cap. A peering white chemise with a bright spot attracts the eye. A little girl in a dark blouse habitually settled down near her mother and laid her head on her knees. Mother gently and carefully picks the baby’s thick dark hair. Everyday household chores. Silence. Even a small dog sits quietly on the floor, looking into the courtyard.
The painter pays great attention to carefully written details. A brass hot-water bottle hangs on a wall with a polished finish; a beautiful ceramic jug decorated with ornaments is standing near the bed. A light yellow tile with blue patterns on the wall next to the door, a glass oil bottle seem absolutely real. In the foreground is a dark wood highchair.
Another distinctive feature of the master’s writing style is in this picture - a complex spatial perspective. An open door leads into another room, filled with bright daylight. Sun spots lie on the floor. And there is another door wide open, or rather, its upper wing leading to the garden. The artist often used this technique, giving the space of the house perspective and depth.
The painter uses a warm, golden palette, pure colors. The picture is filled with air and light.
The atmosphere of family happiness, inner harmony, serenity is remembered for a long time and makes you come back to it again to enjoy the feeling of a leisurely flow of life, the warmth of home comfort.
