Composition V, V. Kandinsky

Composition V, V. Kandinsky

Composition V - Vasily Kandinsky. Oil on Canvas 190x275.0 cm

Impressions, improvisations and compositions - these are the three forms on which Vasily Kandinsky relied, finally breaking the link with subject painting. And although his abstractions are often accepted as spontaneous sketches, such a simplified perception is erroneous. Each artist’s composition is a carefully verified work endowed with semantic meaning through form, color and their combinations. Composition V. is no exception.

The canvas was created in 1911, and the author has just embarked on the theoretical development of his meaningful abstractionism. The main idea of the picture is in tune with the justification of his work as a whole - it is the changeable gradations of colors and tones, the tangible sounds that surround a person, now passing by, then falling, all this is subject to the movement that flows in its metro rhythm.

This composition, like its predecessors (IV and the first three, which were preserved only in the form of photographs), and its followers (VI-X) is a fixation of the impression, but not of the momentary, but deeply meaningful and felt, thought out.

The central element in the work is the line, which the author gives a detailed justification in his treatise "Point and Line", even comparing it with sound. In general, the author more than once made an attempt to draw identical parallels between form, color and musical sound. And although these attempts did not succeed, Kandinsky's paintings seemed to be filled with sound. Amazing! What does Composition V sound about? Probably, everyone himself should answer this question, because every work of art is intimate and subjective in its perception.
