Belvedere Palace is one of the most chic old palace buildings in Vienna. The palace complex consists of the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere, between them there are gardens that are laid out in the French style.

The great commander and esthete Eugene of Savoy

Eugene of Savoy was in the Austrian capital at the age of nineteen. He was born into an aristocratic family, but he never enjoyed popularity among Viennese nobles.

The recognition of his merits will be much later, after he wins more than one battle and becomes one of the richest people of his time. For the victory over the Ottoman army, he will be ordained a noble knight.

At the end of the 17th century, he served with three emperors from the Habsburg clan and, after a short period of time, received the rank of Field Marshal, and also became a wealthy man.

Then he builds a chic palace in the Austrian capital according to the project of the outstanding architect of that time, Lucas von Hildebrand. Nowadays, this building houses the Ministry of Finance of the country. This building of wonderful architectural forms is called the Winter Palace. The Belvedere Summer Palace was built a little later.

Splendor of the Lower Belvedere

At the beginning of the XVIII century, Eugene of Savoy acquires a land plot located outside the city (nowadays the fourth district of the Austrian capital is located there) and begins to erect the Lower Belvedere there, which, according to tradition, is built according to the architectural developments of Lucas von Hildebrand.

All the halls and rooms in the castle, such as the Marble Gallery, the Main Bedroom, the Marble Hall and the Mirror Office, were created taking into account all the wishes of Eugene of Savoy. The pictures flaunted moments of battles and victories with the participation of the prince, the defeated Turks were depicted, as well as sculptures of ancient heroes from expensive marble stone.

Today, the Lower Belvedere is a baroque museum. There is the beautiful Donner Fountain (popular name - Providence Fountain) and many other beautiful exhibits. This palace often hosts various exhibition events.

Between the Lower and Upper Belvedere there is a wonderful French park, which is decorated with various fountains, antique statues and sphinxes.

Upper Belvedere Art Treasures

The construction of the Upper Belvedere was begun in 1721. And the very word "Belvedere" began to be used after the death of Eugene of Savoy.

Unlike the Lower Belvedere, which hosted and served as a home for the prince and his family in the summer, the Upper Palace was designed to host balls, rich receptions and business meetings.

Today, in the Upper Belvedere there is an art gallery and a museum. The most valuable exhibits of the palace-museum are: a rich collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt, paintings by Oscar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, works by the Impressionists, as well as works in the Biedermeier style.
