Portrait of William Ude - Pablo Picasso. 81 x 60 cm
Portraits created by the great master at this time are recognized as the pinnacle of the development of cubism. His critical articles attracted public attention to new trends in art, deciphered the intricate techniques of contemporary artists, their ideology and creative program. Grateful artists gladly painted portraits of their impresario. Picasso was no exception.
The portrait is clearly visible in geometric elements. In a typical manner - poor coloring, muffled and inexpressive tones, illusory, subtext - the author gives us an image of a man without a doubt smart and scrupulous in all manifestations. A slightly caricatured image only emphasizes the informal and friendly relations of the model and the artist. The author is ironic over the pedantry of his hero: the perfect collar of a shirt is seized with the same perfect tie, carefully parted hair pierces the parting, a hard and clear lip line completes the portrait.
A small detail of the background - a paper rectangle nailed to a wall - again focuses on the features of Ude's character, symbolizes his indestructible passion for accuracy, order and specificity.
