The image of Pushkin in sculpture

Many sculptors turned to the image of the great poet. In Moscow alone there are ten sculptural works, and in Petersburg and its environs there are five monuments to the poet. Monuments to Pushkin are erected in 33 countries of the world and each of them is somewhat remarkable.

It must be said that all the artists who worked on the image of genius in sculpture rely in their works on the lifetime portraits of the poet (Vivien, Chirikov, Tropinin, Kiprensky). Each portrait provides an opportunity to evaluate the personality of the poet from different angles, each gives food for imagination and interpretation of the image.

The most famous monument to Pushkin was erected in Moscow at the end of the 19th century on a square later named after the poet. The author of the sculpture was A. Opekushin. The master portrayed the poet at the moment of inspiration. His hero is immersed in himself, it seems that the poet is slowly walking along the boulevard, and new lines are being born in his head ...

The same Opekushin became the author of the monument to the poet on Pushkinskaya street in St. Petersburg. In this case, the author shows the poet in a proud pose, rebellious, emotional. Pose of the hero with arms crossed on his chest - reveals the image of Pushkin the rebel, looking to the future, ahead of his time. Many legends are associated with this monument. They say that when the city authorities had the idea to transfer the sculpture to another place, then children from neighboring houses stood up for their Pushkin. They surrounded the monument and did not let the workers pass. Officials succumbed to the children.

In St. Petersburg, on the Square of Arts, there is a monument to the poet, erected in 1957. The author was the famous sculptor Anikushin. Here we see Pushkin inspired reciting poems. Open pose, wide gesture, open face. It is known that the author was not happy with his own work and reworked it several times, trying to find the only option that reveals the complex image of the great poet.

An interesting monument to young Pushkin in the Lyceum Garden of Tsarskoye Selo. The author of the sculpture, R. Bach, portrayed the hero sitting on a park bench and composing poetry. It is known that of all the proposed options, the Bach project was personally chosen by Nicholas II.

Among the Ukrainian monuments to Pushkin, the bust of the poet, established in Odessa, on Primorsky Boulevard, stands out for its artistry. Funding for the construction of the monument was collected all of Odessa. Someone donated 100 rubles, someone a few cents. Odessans tell the legend that the poet’s bust is set with his back to the City Duma, which refused to allocate funds for the installation of the monument. In fact, it was thanks to the financial support of the city authorities that the installation of the monument became possible.

The Pushkin Monument was recently erected in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian capital. The author of the monument was Alexander Belashov, a famous Russian sculptor. His Pushkin was portrayed at the moment of extraordinary inspiration. In one hand he holds a notebook, in the other pen ... It is interesting that, despite the fact that Ethiopia is considered the motherland of the poet’s ancestors on the maternal side, the inhabitants of the African country themselves know almost nothing about it. And the sculpture is called either a Russian pilot or a Russian saint ...
